Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school, three years’ experience in building construction and inspection work; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Requirements

Must pass a criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical, and drug test.  Must possess a valid driver’s license.  Current certification through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in electrical for residential, commercial, electrical plan review, and commercial building.

Nature of Work Performed

Reviews a variety of electrical inspections (commercial and residential) to ensure compliance with City and National Electrical Code Standards.  This position works independently and reports to the Chief Building Inspector.

Examples of Work Performed

Inspects new and existing wiring and electrical installations in residence, business, public, and other buildings for conformance with safety standards, laws, ordinances, safety and zoning codes; plan specifications; and Uniform Construction Code.  Interprets code requirements and recommends compliance procedures to contractors, builders, and owners.  Issues notices for corrections. Performs inspections for certificates of use and occupancy for new construction and additions.  Maintains inspection records.  Investigates complaints received from the public.  Issues citations and appears in court for hearings.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of City Ordinances relating to electrical appliance and installations and of National Electrical Code standards.  Must be well versed in Uniform Construction Code (UCC), state laws, and process for issuance of UCC permits and Certificates of Occupancy.  Through knowledge of the methods and practices involved in constructing, installing, maintaining and operating a variety of electrical installations, equipment and appliances.  Ability to understand and work from construction and wiring plans, blueprints, drawings and diagrams.  Must possess excellent communication skills and be able to build good working relationships with residents, vendors, contractors, government officials, and employees.
