Economic Development Director – Allegheny County

Position Summary

Allegheny County, PA (pop. 1,221,000) seeks a visionary professional to lead Allegheny County Economic Development (ACED) for the second-largest county in Pennsylvania. This position reports to the County Manager and will play a vital role in driving economic growth and development throughout the region. The successful candidate will demonstrate a track record of translating vision into economic impact through partnership and collaboration with businesses, community organizations, and government agencies.

  • ACED consists of the Business Development, Development, Housing, Municipal, Operations, and Planning divisions, all of which report to the Director. The employee headcount is approximately 50 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions.
  • The Director will take a lead role in cultivating a thriving and resilient economy that serves all Allegheny County residents. The newly elected County Executive’s economic development priorities center on job creation, supporting emerging industries, strengthening small businesses, and championing worker protections and enhanced labor standards. The Director will be expected to deliver on these initiatives while aligning the efforts of other County departments and related outside entities with shared economic development goals. 
  • The County seeks candidates with experience leading large-scale organizational transformation and building a high-performing team. Successful candidates will demonstrate a deep knowledge of and commitment to equitable community and economic development principles and practices; the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders; highly developed interpersonal and leadership capabilities; and the ability to cultivate an equitable and inclusive work culture.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in economics, business administration, urban planning, public administration, or related field AND sufficient relevant experience to demonstrate competency in leading a major economic development department. The anticipated annual salary for this position is $175,000.
