WASHINGTON, DC (JANUARY 30, 2024)—The National League of Cities (NLC) and state municipal league partners were in the nation’s capital 1/30-1/31 to advocate for a number of federal priorities. The delegation met with congressional offices and White House officials.
The delegation of local leaders included the executive directors and presidents (who are local elected officials) of 24 state municipal organizations. The states represented include AL, CA, CO, DE, GA, IA, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MS, NC, NE, NJ, NV, PA, VA, VT, WI, WV, and WY.
The delegation pushed federal policymakers on several priorities, including:
- Passing the bipartisan Railway Safety Act (S. 576/H.R. 1674).
- Passing bipartisan legislation to provide additional resources around PFAS mitigation and remediation at the local level, including liability protection for municipal drinking water, wastewater and stormwater utilities, landfills and solid waste facilities, airports, and fire departments, so polluters’ financial burden isn’t shifted to communities and taxpayers.
- Urging Congress to avoid a federal government shutdown or a full year Continuing Resolution, and send the 12 annual appropriations bills as passed by the Senate to the president for enactment.
- Extending the Affordable Connectivity Program so that millions of households don’t lose broadband service and the accumulation of debt from unpaid bills.
As founding members of NLC, the 49 state municipal leagues play an important role in guiding the organization’s priorities and are essential partners in shaping and advancing federal policy that supports municipalities of all sizes across the country.
