FACT SHEET: How Many Pennsylvanians Will Lose SNAP Benefits in Each Republican U.S. House District as a Result of the Federal Government Shutdown
Governor Shapiro has taken legal action to protect food assistance for nearly 2 million Pennsylvanians as the federal shutdown halts SNAP payments beginning November 1.
Across Pennsylvania, more than 713,000 children and 697,000 older adults rely on SNAP each month.
Harrisburg, PA – Today, the Shapiro Administration released a detailed breakdown of the nearly two million Pennsylvanians who will lose Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on November 1 as a result of Congressional Republicans’ refusal to reopen the federal government and end the federal shutdown, which will halt SNAP payments nationwide.
If the Trump Administration and Republicans in Congress fail to act, nearly two million Pennsylvanians — including more than 713,000 children and 697,000 older adults — could lose access to more than $366 million in monthly food assistance beginning November 1.
Governor Josh Shapiro has joined 24 other states and Washington, D.C. in suing the Trump Administration for unlawfully suspending SNAP payments and failing to use billions in Congressionally-approved contingency funds to continue benefits during the shutdown.
Nearly one in eight Pennsylvanians depends on SNAP, which provides critical food assistance to low-income families, seniors, and people with disabilities. The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and Department of Agriculture are coordinating with local food banks and community organizations to prepare for the potential disruption in benefits.
Below is a breakdown of how many Pennsylvanians receive SNAP in each Republican-held U.S. House District – all of whom will lose SNAP benefits beginning November 1 if the federal government shutdown continues. The data is also available by county.
