City of York Introduces York’s New Poet Laureate at the Inaugural York Book Fest

The City of York is proud to reaffirm its commitment to celebrating creativity, storytelling, and the power of the arts to unite our community.

Mayor Sandie Walker will officially introduce Heath James Hardin as the City of York’s new Poet Laureate during the inaugural York Book Fest on Friday, July 17, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the courtyard of Grace Manor Bed & Breakfast, 258 W. Market Street. The announcement will serve as one of the featured highlights of York’s first-ever literary festival.

“Poetry has the unique ability to inspire, preserve history, and bring people together through shared experiences,” said Mayor Sandie Walker. “The return of the Poet Laureate Program represents our continued investment in York’s vibrant arts community and our commitment to ensuring that creativity remains an essential part of our city’s identity. We are excited to welcome Heath James Hardin into this important role and look forward to the impact his voice will have throughout our community.”

The Poet Laureate serves as an ambassador for literature and the literary arts by promoting poetry through public readings, educational programs, community engagement, and special civic events. The program aims to inspire residents of all ages to explore creative expression while celebrating the diverse voices that make York unique.

Heath James Hardin brings more than two decades of experience as a creative writing educator, poet, songwriter, and performer. Throughout his career, he has encouraged individuals of all ages to discover and share their stories through writing. His work reflects a deep appreciation for community, history, and the transformative power of words.

The announcement coincides with the inaugural York Book Fest, a free two-day literary festival taking place July 17–18, 2026, in Downtown York. Organized by author Jadi Z. Omowale, the festival will feature author readings, book signings, children’s activities, writing workshops, and opportunities for residents to connect with writers from across the region. The event seeks to promote literacy, celebrate local authors, and encourage a lifelong love of reading.

The City of York invites residents, families, educators, aspiring writers, and book lovers to attend this historic celebration as York welcomes its newest Poet Laureate and celebrates the city’s growing literary community.
