Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Applications Open – Due July 17

PennDOT has opened the application site for the 2023 Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside of the Surface Block Grant Program (TA Set-Aside), and required draft applications will be due on July 17, 2023 (only three weeks from today).

The TA Set-Aside provides funding for projects that enhance pedestrian and bicycle facilities, improve access to public transportation, create safe routes to schools, preserve historic transportation structures, provide environmental mitigation, create trails that serve a transportation purpose, and promote safety and mobility.  This round we’re pushing to increase Safe Routes to School applications for both infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects.

There is a newly revised PennDOT SRTS website which includes helpful information on SRTS projects such as basic program information, application information, frequently asked questions, and a toolkit with social media posts, newsletter language, and a flyer that you can use to help get the word out about SRTS projects and the available funding.  You are encouraged to share this information with your organization and affiliated members.

For those that are interested in applying for funds, draft applications must be submitted by July 17, 2023, for PennDOT District and Planning Partner review.  After review, final applications may be submitted until September 15, 2023.  Selections from participating large MPOs will be due December 1, 2023.  The statewide project selection committee will meet in January 2024 to recommend projects for receipt of statewide TA Set-Aside funds.  Approximately $28 million in statewide funds will be made available, in addition to the funds available regionally from participating large MPOs.
