THE POSITION OF: Assistant City Solicitor
DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Law Department
CLASSIFICATION: Management
PAY RATE: DOQ, 35 hours/week
Position Summary
To provide internal legal counsel and guidance to the Mayor, members of City Council and Department/Division Directors on matters involving all aspects of Federal, State or Municipal law.
- Participates in the development and interpretation of City departmental policies
- Reviews and drafts contracts and other agreements
- Provide counsel and advice on legal matters and the important aspects of government relationships
- Handles litigated matters including preparing for and attending hearings, depositions and arbitrations
- Coordinates the enforcement of the City’s codified ordinances and represents the City of Reading at hearings involving violation of the codified ordinances as assigned by the City Solicitor
- Participates in meetings and hearings before government bodies
- Perform other related duties as needed
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania
Experience, Skills & Abilities
- One to five years experience strongly preferred, however newly admitted attorneys with strong academic background and other credentials will be considered
- Municipal and/or civil litigation experience preferred
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
